All Ph D candidates write examinations in two major fields.

Students must advise the Graduate Administrator at least three weeks in advance of an examination of the field(s) in which they wish to be examined.

Students requiring special accommodations for the examination must indicate their accommodation needs. The purpose of a comprehensive examination is to provide an opportunity to demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the relevant literature within a field.

A satisfactory examination demonstrates analytical and critical skills pertaining to both research and teaching.

If you want to write a dissertation on political science, you will need to do a lot of planning. Ensure that you make the right choice of a subtopic in political science.

Choose a question/ topic that is sufficiently focus to ensure that you have a reference for the literature research as well as interest and understanding in the theory behind the topic.

Any appeals will be made in writing to the Dean of FGPA within two weeks of the announcement of results. The grades for PSCI 6900 and PSCI 6905 are reported as “INP” until the comprehensive examinations are taken.

Passing grades for these courses are “distinction” or “satisfactory.” Failing grades for these courses is “unsatisfactory”. A student who receives a grade of “unsatisfactory” on a comprehensive examination will be permitted one re examination. Any student who fails a second comprehensive examination (same field) will be withdrawn from the program. The results of a comprehensive examination may only be appealed on procedural grounds. On admission each student is assigned a potential Ph D dissertation supervisor from among the departmental faculty.

** These two courses are normally taken in the second year. ***A core course comp is written in August of the year that a student finishes the two halves of the core course. 1.0 credit at the 6000-level in each of the candidate’s two major fields of study.

A B or better must be obtained in the field course for students to be allowed to proceed to the respective comprehensive examination. It is anticipated that Ph D candidates will enter having taken some political theory at the undergraduate level, regardless of their desired field of specialization.
